The Protodeck: Building a Custom Interface from the Ground Up

Host:

Julien Bayle

Artistic expression has never versified as much as with technique and technology as today. The whole contents of media use at one time or another, in their cycles of production and consumption, a whirlwind of new technologies and data processing. Through my own experience in the world of music and sound production, I will explain the path that led me to my interest in electronics, embedded software, and the creation of human-machine interfaces. I will address the question of what this new world of technologies and information means to us, as artists, and how we can use this with the aim of performing on stage and in the studio.

This workshop will cover the essentials of developing my own project, the big and amazing controller, PROTODECK. Everything from the choices I had to make in layout, circuit design, interaction, software choices, and all the reasons as to what led to this project. A focus on building a personal control interface to work along side Ableton Live and how MAX4Live was used to make this a reality. Lastly, the workshop will close with a demonstration and Q&A section. This workshop is adaptable and useful to all levels of technical backgrounds, from the beginners to the most skilled electronic specialists. It will also allow a true reflection on the new practices of Do-It-Yourself ethics which correspond to art. Through a concrete example this workshop will be able to inspire people to create, invent, and pushing their own limits of experience by taking control of some of the open tools that are out there. Hopefully, we will see a rise of new tools for artistic expression that let us free our minds and start creating!
